WE ALWAYS HAVE A LOT OF GREAT THINGS TO CELEBRATE, BUT I'M GOING TO START OFF JUST TALKING ABOUT TODAY.

TODAY WAS AN INCREDIBLE DAY IN PIKE TOWNSHIP FOR THE THIRD YEAR, THANKS TO OUR PARTNERS AT RESILIENT PIKE AND A GENEROUS SUPPORT OF CARDNO.

A TREE WAS PLANTED AT EVERY SCHOOL IN PIKE TOWNSHIP.

ANNETTE JOHNSON. REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE PIKE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND MR. RYAN MENDENHALL JOINED US FOR OUR TREE PLANNING HERE AT THE ASG THIS MORNING.

AFTER EDUCATING US ON THE BENEFITS AND ATTRIBUTES OF OUR TREE, WHICH IS SOMETHING THEY DID AT EVERY SCHOOL.

MR. CLOTH, WHO LEADS RESILIENT PIKE, COMPARED PLANTING A TREE TO PLANTING HOPE AS STUDENTS THROUGHOUT PIKE PLANTED HOPE BY PLANTING TREES.

TODAY THEY LEARNED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF TREES AND WERE OFTEN AWED BY THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THE TREE THEY HELPED PLANT WOULD STILL BE THERE 50 YEARS FROM NOW. THEY WERE LITERALLY PLANTING ROOTS IN PIKE TOWNSHIP AT ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS.

THEY DEDICATED THEIR TREE TO A CLASSMATE WHO PASSED AWAY PRIOR TO THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

EACH PLANTING WAS UNIQUE AND IMPACTFUL AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SHARING MORE ABOUT IT NEXT WEEK.

IN THE MEANTIME, THOUGH, WE WANT TO THANK ALL OF THE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS WHO CAME OUT AND ASSISTED WITH DIGGING HOLES, PLANTING TREES AND EDUCATING US.

WE WANT TO THANK MR. GRUBER AND HIS TEAM FOR THEIR SUPPORT, OUR LIBRARIANS AND DISTRICT INSTRUCTIONAL SPECIALIST ERIC NAYLOR FOR COORDINATING THE ENTIRE EFFORT.

IT WAS ALSO A VERY SPECIAL DAY AND THAT WE HAD TWO OF OUR GRADUATES COME HOME TO SHARE THEIR STORIES.

LOCAL RADIO LEGEND BEA SWIFT INTERVIEWED DEANNA DIXON ABOUT HER EXPERIENCES, WHICH INCLUDE RELEASING YOUR OWN MUSIC, BEING PART OF THE SUNDAY SERVICE CHOIR, SINGING WITH JOHN LEGEND AND PERFORMING ON THE OSCARS WITH BEYONCE.

THEY WERE EXTREMELY GENEROUS WITH THEIR TIME.

THEY SHARED THEIR INSPIRATION.

THEY SHARED THEIR WISDOM.

THEY ENCOURAGED OUR STUDENTS TO FOLLOW THEIR DREAMS AND TO STAY STRONG IN THEIR FAITH, IN THEMSELVES AND IN GENERAL.

AND IT REALLY OUR KIDS WERE INSPIRED.

THEY WERE ASKING INCREDIBLE QUESTIONS.

THEY WERE BEGGING FOR PICTURES.

AFTERWARDS, YOU COULD TELL THAT THEY WERE MOVED BY SEEING PEOPLE WHO CAME FROM THEIR COMMUNITY, SAT IN THEIR CLASSROOMS, WALKED IN THE SAME HALLS AS THEM, DOING SUCH BIG THINGS, AND THEY UNDERSTAND THAT THAT'S A POSSIBILITY FOR THEM AS WELL.

AND IT WAS JUST A REALLY, REALLY SPECIAL THING.

AND I WANT TO THANK EDUCATOR NICI JONES FOR MAKING THAT POSSIBLE AS WELL.

THIS EVENING WE'RE HOSTING KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP AT ALL OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, SO WE'RE GETTING READY TO WELCOME THE NEXT CLASS OF BRILLIANT YOUNG PEOPLE INTO PIKE TOWNSHIP. SATURDAY, THE FRESHMAN CENTER IS HOSTING AVIATION DAY FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES EIGHT THROUGH 12, AND OUR ROBOT DEVILS ARE COMPETING IN STATE.

BECAUSE WORDS CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TOWARDS HOW MUCH THEY GAVE OF THEMSELVES SO THAT OUR STUDENTS WERE SUPPORTED THIS YEAR.

WHEN WE REFLECT ABOUT THE STAFFING CHALLENGES, BOTH LAURA AND GILLY WERE A TEAM SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS WITH THE HIGHEST NEEDS.

THEY SERVED IN POSITIONS OF CLASSROOM TEACHER, TEACHER, RECORD, TEACHER, SERVICE, INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, MENTOR, AND AT THE SAME TIME SERVED IN THEIR ASSIGNED POSITIONS.

MANY MONTHS WORKING 10 TO 12 HOUR DAYS AND WEEKENDS TO GET THEIR JOBS DONE.

THEIR LOVE FOR THE STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY FOR THIS POPULATION OF STUDENTS, GAVE THEM THE ENERGY TO CONTINUE THROUGH THEIR EXHAUSTION.

THANK YOU BOTH FOR STEPPING UP, FOR LEANING IN AND STANDING IN THE GAP.

YOU MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE STUDENTS TO CONTINUE TO LEARN AND ENRICHING AND GREAT ENVIRONMENT.

NEXT UP THIS HOUR, AN UPDATE ON OUR GOAL GOAL EQUITY ORIENTED STRATEGIC PLAN.

WHO? MR. PRESENT.

I'M A LITTLE NERVOUS, SO BEAR WITH ME.

I'M HERE TO PROVIDE AN UPDATE ON EQUITY.

GOAL NUMBER ONE TO SHARE WHAT WE'VE DONE SO FAR AND THE WORK THAT WE NEED TO DO TO CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS.

AS YOU ARE AWARE, IN THE SCHOOL YEAR OF 2019, 2020, A SMALL PORTION OF OUR EQUITY COUNCIL CAME TOGETHER AND WE FORMED OUR EQUITY TEAM AND WE WORKED WITH THE GREAT LAKES EQUITY CENTER TO CREATE OUR EQUITY ORIENTED STRATEGIC PLAN.

AND FROM THAT PLAN, WE IDENTIFIED THREE GOALS THAT WE FELT LIKE WE NEEDED TO ACHIEVE TO MAKE OUR DISTRICT MORE EQUITABLE.

THE FIRST GOAL BEING FOCUSED ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, WITH THE GOAL BEING BY MAY OF 2020 FOR 75% OF MSD OF PIKE TOWNSHIP, STAFF WILL IMPLEMENT CULTURALLY SUSTAINING PRACTICES THAT SUPPORT AN EQUITABLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

OUR OBJECTIVE WAS TO SEE THAT THE ACHIEVEMENT OF OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES INCREASE, AND WE KNEW THAT WE WOULD MAKE THAT THAT WE WERE MET.

WE HAVE MET OUR GOAL IF WE SAW AN INCREASE IN STANDARDIZED ASSESSMENTS, AN INCREASE IN CULTURE SUSTAINING LANGUAGE RESOURCES, LESSON PLANS, ASSESSMENTS, ETC., AND ALSO INITIATIVE BEING TAKEN BY TEACHERS TO BUILD CAPACITY IN THE AREA OF CULTURE SUSTAINING PRACTICES BY INCREASING THEIR ENGAGEMENT IN THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SURROUNDING CULTURE SUSTAINING PRACTICES.

SO BEFORE I TALK TO YOU MORE ABOUT THE GOAL, I WANT TO JUST GIVE YOU A BRIEF UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT CULTURE SUSTAINING PEDAGOGY IS.

CULTURE SUSTAINING PEDAGOGY CAME OUT OF THE WORK OF SAMUEL ALLAM AND DJANGO PEREZ, AND IT IS AN EVOLUTION OF CULTURALLY RELEVANT PEDAGOGY, WHICH WAS COINED BY GLORIA LARSON BILLINGS.

SHE CALLED IT THE REMIX.

I'M GOING TO READ THIS QUOTE TO YOU AND THEN EXPLAIN IT A LITTLE BIT.

SO CULTURE SUSTAINING PRACTICES HAS THE EXPLICIT GOAL OF SUPPORTING MULTILINGUALISM AND MULTICULTURALISM IN PRACTICE AND PERSPECTIVE FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS.

IT SEEKS TO PERPETUATE AND FOSTER TO SUSTAIN LINGUISTIC, LITERATE AND CULTURAL PLURALISM AS A PART OF DEMOCRATIC PROJECT OF SCHOOLING AND AS A NEEDED RESPONSE TO DEMOGRAPHIC, DEMOGRAPHIC, EXCUSE ME, AND SOCIAL CHANGE.

SO ALL THAT TO SAY THAT THE CURRENT WAY OR THE DOMINANT WAY OF TEACHING IN SCHOOLS IS MOSTLY SEEING WHAT OUR STUDENTS BRING TO THE BRING TO THE

CLASSROOM, THEIR CULTURAL WAYS OF BEING AS DEFICITS, NOT AS ASSETS, AS THINGS THAT NEED TO BE OVERCOME AND THAT THEY NEED TO ASSIMILATE.

AND CULTURE SUSTAINING PRACTICES IS THE DIRECT OPPOSITE.

WE SEE OUR STUDENTS CULTURAL WAYS OF BEING AS RESOURCES, AS ASSETS, AS WAYS THAT WE CAN BUILD UPON, AND THEN ALSO TO EXTEND. SO WE WANT THEM TO BE MULTICULTURAL, MEANING THAT YOU CAN HAVE YOUR OWN CULTURAL WAY OF BEING, ALSO LEARN A DOMINANT CULTURE SO THAT YOU'LL BE SUCCESSFUL IN SOCIETY, BUT TO VALUE WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE.

AND WITH THAT CULTURE, IN THE WAY WE LOOK AT CULTURE IS NOT IN A SIMPLISTIC WAY OF LIKE FUN FOOD FESTIVALS, CULTURAL FAIRS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

WE LOOK AT CULTURE IN A MORE COMPLEX WAY.

THIS QUOTE IS FROM SONIA NIETO, A SCHOLAR, AND SHE SAYS THAT THE EVER CHANGING VALUES CULTURE IS, EXCUSE ME, THE EVER CHANGING VALUES, TRADITIONS, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL RELATIONSHIP AND WORLDVIEWS CREATED, SHARED AND TRANSFORMED BY A GROUP OF PEOPLE BOUND TOGETHER BY A COMBINATION OF FACTORS THAT CAN INCLUDE A COMMON HISTORY, GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION, LANGUAGE, SOCIAL CLASS AND RELIGION.

SHE ALSO SAYS THAT CULTURE CAN MEAN THE TRADITIONS ONE CELEBRATES WITH THE FAMILY, WHICH IS WHAT WE TYPICALLY THINK OF, IN WHICH CASE IT IS REDUCED TO FOODS, DANCES AND HOLIDAYS.

BUT LESS OFTEN IS A CULTURE THOUGHT OF AS A VALUES ONE HOST STEER OR THE WAY ONE LOOKS AT AND INTERACTS WITH THE WORLD.

SO WE LOOK AT CULTURE AS BEING THE AIR YOU BREATHE.

IT PERMEATES EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO, AND YOU DON'T EVEN REALIZE SOME OF THE WAYS THAT YOU ARE IS BECAUSE OF YOUR CULTURE.

SO WE WANT OUR STAFF, OUR TEACHING STAFF TO UNDERSTAND THE COMPLEXITIES OF IT AND NOT TO SEE IT AS SIMPLE AND ALSO NOT TO SEE IT AS A DEFICIT. SO WHEN WE CREATED OUR PLAN INITIALLY IN THE 2019, 2020 SCHOOL YEAR, WE CAME UP WITH THESE FIVE STRATEGIES.

THE FIRST ONE BEING THAT WE WOULD HAVE THREE EMBEDDED WHOLE DISTRICT PODS DURING THE 20, 20, 21 SCHOOL YEAR.

AND ACTUALLY ALL OF THESE STRATEGIES OCCURRED DURING THE 2020, 21 SCHOOL YEAR.

WE ALSO WANTED TO IDENTIFY EQUITY FACILITATORS AT EACH BUILDING WITH TWO BEING AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THREE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND FIVE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.

ADDITIONALLY, WE WANTED TO DEVELOP A RUBRIC THAT WE COULD USE TO MEASURE THE SUCCESS AND THE NEEDS OF OUR TEACHING STAFF AND OUR STUDENTS.

WE ALSO WANTED TO PROVIDE, EXCUSE ME, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP TEAM IN THE AREA OF CULTURE SUSTAINING PRACTICES AND PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR OUR EQUITY FACILITATORS.

AND THAT ALL OCCURRED DURING THE 2021 SCHOOL YEAR.

WE MET WITH OUR EQUITY FACILITATORS MONTHLY DURING THAT YEAR.

I LED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR EQUITY FACILITATORS AND THE LEADERSHIP TEAM AS WELL AS ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS MONTHLY WITH OUR FOCUS BEING ON INITIALLY BUILDING OUR CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS.

SO HELPING OUR EQUITY FACILITATORS AND LEADERSHIP TEAM TO START TO LOOK AT THE WORLD WITH A MORE CRITICAL LENS TO KIND OF DISRUPT THE STATUS QUO OF TRADITIONAL WAYS OF BEING AND THEN MOVING INTO UNDERSTANDING WHAT CULTURE SUSTAINING PRACTICES REALLY MEANS.

OH, ONE OTHER THING I'M SORRY THAT'S NOT LISTED ON THERE IS THAT IN ADDITION TO THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, MYSELF AND TRACY SWINTON AND DANIELLE JONES, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF DEER RUN, WE WERE ALL TRAINED IN WHAT'S CALLED AN I.D., WHICH IS AN INTERCULTURAL DEVELOPMENT INVENTORY.

AND IT'S A TOOL THAT YOU CAN USE TO I'LL USE THE WORD ASSESS A PERSON'S INTERCULTURAL DEVELOPMENT.

SO HOW ARE THEY ABLE TO HOW EFFECTIVELY ARE THEY ABLE TO NAVIGATE DIFFERENT CULTURAL WAYS OF BEING? AND IT USES FIVE ORIENTATIONS TO ASSESS SOMEONE'S INTERCULTURAL DEVELOPMENT, THE FIRST TWO BEING MONOCULTURAL, WHERE YOU HAVE A SIMPLISTIC VIEW OF CULTURE, YOU'RE NOT REALLY SURE HOW TO NAVIGATE DIFFERENCES.

THE MIDDLE ONE BEING A MORE TRANSITIONAL ORIENTATION WHERE KIND OF LIKE THE COLORBLIND, COLORBLIND WAY OF THINKING THAT WE'RE ALL THE SAME AND TRYING TO JUST BASED YOUR WAYS OF GETTING ALONG WITH PEOPLE ON COMMONALITIES AND THEN THE LAST TO ACCEPTANCE AND ADAPTATION MORE YOU ARE UNDERSTANDING MORE ABOUT CULTURE AND THEN ALSO ABLE TO NAVIGATE IT.

SO THAT WAS GIVEN TO THE EQUITY FACILITATORS LAST YEAR AND THEN IT WAS USED AS INFORMATION FOR ME TO TO DETERMINE WHAT NEEDS TO OCCUR MOVING FORWARD.

SO THIS SCHOOL YEAR, THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT HAVE OCCURRED.

WE HAD OUR DISTRICT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPENING DAY.

WE HAD A VARIETY OF SPEAKERS COME AND SPEAK TO US.

AND ALSO ON MARCH 1ST, OUR DISTRICT PD DAY, WE HAD A SPEAKER COME AND SPEAK TO US AS WELL IN THE AREA OF EQUITY.

I AM CONTINUALLY TO MEET WITH THE EQUITY FACILITATORS MONTHLY AND WE HAD AN INITIAL TENTATIVE AGENDA.

WE WERE ALWAYS.

LET ME BACK UP BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SAY WHAT I'M SAYING.

LET ME MOVE OVER TO STAFF, THE SCHOOL STAFF, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

SO I PRESENTED TO THE EQUITY FACILITATORS LAST YEAR, AGAIN STARTING WITH BUILDING CAPACITY AND THEN MOVING ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO HELP THEM TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT CULTURE SUSTAINING PEDAGOGY.

SO I TOOK THOSE PRESENTATIONS AND I ADAPTED THEM TO FIT SCHOOL STAFF, KNOWING THAT OUR EQUITY FACILITATORS VOLUNTEERED FOR THIS IN OUR SCHOOLS, THAT MAY NOT BE IN THE SAME READY, HAD THE SAME READINESS AS OUR EQUITY FACILITATORS.

BUT I KNEW THAT THAT PROGRESSION WORKED WITH THE EQUITY FACILITATORS, AND NOT ONLY THAT, THEY WERE FAMILIAR WITH IT, SO THEN THEY COULD PRESENT IT TO THEIR SCHOOL STAFF.

SO WITH THOSE PRESENTATIONS, EQUITY FACILITATORS AND LEADERSHIP WERE CHARGED WITH PRESENTING THE PRESENTATIONS TO THE SCHOOLS AND USING THE SAME GOAL OF BUILDING THEIR CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND THEN SLOWLY MOVING INTO UNDERSTANDING CULTURE, SUSTAINING PEDAGOGY.

SO ON YOUR RIGHT LIST, THE DIFFERENT PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES.

SO STARTING WITH FIRST CREATING A SAFE SPACE BECAUSE YOU THIS IS A VULNERABLE CONVERSATIONS AND YOU WANT PEOPLE TO BE OPEN AND HONEST ABOUT WHERE THEY ARE AND THEIR NEEDS AND THEN JUST PROGRESSING THROUGH DEEPENING THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF JUST CULTURE IN GENERAL AND THEN APPLYING IT TO THEMSELVES AND UNDERSTANDING THE COMPLEXITIES OF IT.

THEN MOVING INTO UNDERSTANDING HOW CULTURE AND POWER ARE CONNECTED.

AND THEN THE LAST PRESENTATION FOCUSED ON UNDERSTANDING THE ORIGINS OF RACE AND RACISM.

SO AGAIN, JUST SCAFFOLDING THEM, SCAFFOLDING THEM TO DEVELOP THEIR CRITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS.

SO MOVING BACK OVER TO THE LEFT WITH THE EQUITY FACILITATOR MEETINGS, WE INITIALLY START WITH A DEBRIEFING OF HOW THE PRESENTATIONS ARE GOING.

I WILL REVIEW THE NEW PRESENTATION WITH THEM.

AND THIS SCHOOL YEAR WE JUST HAVE NOT GOTTEN SOME MORE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE THEY'RE DOING THE WORK AND THEY HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS AND THEY WERE TALKING A LOT.

SO WE REALLY HAVE JUST BEEN DEBRIEFING THE PRESENTATIONS AND GOING OVER THE NEW ONES WITH THE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT.

I DID PRESENT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR TRYING TO CONTINUE TO EXTEND OUR CONVERSATIONS FROM LAST YEAR.

SO HELPING THE LEADERSHIP TO UNDERSTAND THE CULTURE, SUSTAINING PEDAGOGY.

SO STARTING WITH CULTURALLY RELEVANT PEDAGOGY AND THE COMPLEXITIES OF THAT AND THEN SHIFTING INTO CULTURE SUSTAINING PEDAGOGY.
